About ICEI
The Communication and Image Institute is one of the fourth
centers with rank of Faculty under the University of Chile´s
umbrella, the most important tertiary institution of the country,
founded in 1842.
The ICEI was created on june 17th 2003 as a high level academic
unit in order to develop the research, teaching and extension
areas connected to problems and matters related to communications
in a contemporaneous society.
The Communication and Image Institute emerge as the university
answer to assume the strategic importance of the communication
in the area of knowledge formed by the interaction between
different disciplines of social studies, arts and humanities.
The ICEI is also the inheritor of the consolidated work achieved
for more than half of century by the Journalism
School (founded in 1953) of the University
of Chile, the oldest of the country and one of the
first tertiary institution in Latin America in the education
of university journalists and graduated social communication
professionals.
The most important professionals of the Chilean media have
been in its classrooms. At the present time the ICEI depends
of the Undergraduate Programs
Office.
On the other hand, the Graduate
Programs Office is responsible of the Master
in Political Communication and the Documentary
Cinema Specialization Program which together with
other courses and diplomas are focused in presenting the audiovisual
media not only as a multiplication and spreading messengers
technology, but also as a memory builder and a social intervention
tool.
The ICEI structure is completed by the Communication
Studies Center and the Freedom
of Expression Interdisciplinary Program destined units
to open a path towards an innovative development in the research
from where the state university appears responsible of the
community demands in front of the media communication industry.
The Institute facilities are located in the Juan Gómez
Millas Campus, Ñuñoa, Santiago, Chile, in a
very modern construction of more than 4 thousand square meters
distributed in a four story building. As part of this interesting
infrastructure are the teaching areas, the multimedia facilities,
a practical library with more than 9,000 books, 11,000 magazines,
thesis, documents, video tapes, and a complete file with media
articles.
In addition the ICEI offers a comfortable auditorium for
more than 400 people, special studios and classrooms for digital
edition of radio programs provided with Internet, cinema,
and TV as soon as computing and photograph labs all of them
with last generation equipments.
